Survival of the Fittest

Recently, I noticed a dead osprey face down, wings outstretched on a neighbor's lawn.  I suspected it had fallen from the sky because it wasn't huddled into a ball, but spread wide.  I don't think anyone saw what happened.  After a few days, I wondered if it was one of "our" ospreys, since lately I only saw the juvenile and one adult.  Given the fact that earlier there was a private war going on involving "our" osprey, I suspect the bird could have been attacked.  We will never know.

Osprey family in July.  The juvenile is the little speckled bird in the middle.

Since then, I photographed the juvenile defending their food from an adult bird by holding it down with a claw (not very successfully).

The juveniles can be identified easily by their orange-yellow eyes, while the adults have yellow eyes.

Lighthouse Water Tour

Lighthouse Water Tour, a set on Flickr.

We took a tour of several lighthouses on the Chesapeake Bay on Phil Langley's Lisa S in late September. There were several camera clubs invited. The day was quite windy, so I didn't get an award winning photo of Point No Point with a lovely reflection, but we had lots of fun and had lunch together afterwards.

Point No Point Lighthouse

Over the weekend we took a lovely cool boat ride out into the Chesapeake Bay. We went past Point No Point Lighthouse and saw a school of fish nearby. It is about 2 miles from shore and 6 miles North of Point Lookout. I believe it is currently owned by the Federal government, but was almost sold in private auction in 2008. It is a popular landmark for fishermen and needs a lot of renovation.

This photograph later won first place in the advanced digital monthly competition. The judge liked the reflection and placement of the lighthouse.
