May Day at Historic St. Mary's City
Historic St. Mary’s City celebrated the coming of spring on
May 3rd at 11AM with a dance around the May Pole near the St. Mary’s
River, for visitor’s and staff. The colorful
satin ribbons were delightfully woven at the end of the dance and were slowly unfurled
by the staff, preparing for a second dance at 3 PM. Visitors also participated in crafts and
colonial games.
For some reason, I always wanted to watch a May Pole Dance. (I must have read too many British novels!) I wish I could have figured out a way to take pictures and dance at the same time. It looked like fun.Tuesday, April 30, 2013
St. Maries Musica Performance at Historic St. Mary's City
We enjoyed a special concert by St. Maries Musica, a excellent local acapella group at the rebuilt Brick Chapel in Historic St. Mary's City on Friday April 26th. The chapel was filled to capacity for this intimate concert. I especially loved "Going Home" based on a portion of "The New World Symphony" by Antonin Dvorak.
The concert was directed by Krystal McCoy. Here is Krystal smiling at the choir after one of their songs.
We were rewarded with a lovely sunset at the end of the program.
Their next public concert is at Patuxent Presbyterian Church Concert: 23421 Kingston Creek Road, California, MD 20619 on May 6th at 7PM.

Kelby Worldwide Photowallk 2011
I participated in the Kelby Worldwide Photowalk on Oct 1st at Historic St. Mary's City. It was a gray day, but the temperature was pleasant. (last year's walk was in July when it hit 100 degrees!) We got together for one big group shot at the beginning of the walk and then separated to wander around the grounds. Costumed employees were a popular photo topic since the Dove (ship) wasn't in port.
Each photographer could choose one favorite photo to add into a contest to compete against other photographers in the rest of the world. There was a local Photowalk Flickr page for uploading some of our favorite pictures from the day. A number of the really interesting photos used a technique called HDR, high dynamic range. By merging several or many files with different exposures, the photo appears to have extra depth and vibrancy, even on a gray day. Enjoy!
