BIrds of St Marys County

A few of the various birds I have seen this year in St. Mary's County.  Although the last one was cheating a little, since it isn't exactly biologically organic.

Point Lookout Lighthouse Summer 2025

 

We visited the newly renovated Point Lookout Lighthouse June 9th (which is open on 4 day weekends through the summer). I wanted to see if there were any photos of one of my friends who grew up there, Eunice Knott, and finally found one photo of her on the wall in her graduation gown. There was a nice exhibit about different types of buoys, including a tall spar buoy (red and white) and newer 6x20 LR (green). Inside the lighthouse, the Friends of Point Lookout put in some furnishings. The clock resembled a clock I grew up with that my grandparents owned. I once took a bad photo of Mr. Raymond Hartzel, enlisted Coast Guard, who worked for George Gatton, last civilian lighthouse keeper on July 11, 2009 while he was visiting. Raymond Hartzel link. I didn't go up to the very top when I noticed the entrance was very small for someone with a large camera and poor balance, but I found the old photo I took on July 11, 2009.

Eagle photos from January

I finally downloaded photos from my new Nikon camera.  I am learning how to use all the new features and testing it.  The eagle was visiting the osprey nest.  I have way  more to learn.

Two Bald Eagles Hanging Out on the Loblolly Pine

We have a few tall Loblolly Pine trees on our property.  They have become a little more popular since the geese took over the osprey nest.  Sometimes the osprey and eagles like to sit on the high branches and look for their next meal.  Recently, an eagle pair were enjoying the view.

 I love watching the bald eagles come to visit the osprey nest.  It is such a privilege to see them.

The fish was too small to share with the partner bird!  The left eagle in this photo had just flown down with a fish, nearly hitting it’s partner.  The right eagle actually ducked to avoid getting hit with his/her partner’s wings.  I have some blurry photos of it taken at high speed, but not high enough.  They add to the story a little anyway.  I put them at the end since they aren’t the best photos.

Eagles can be bad flyers sometimes.

I couldn't decide which portrayed President's Day better using my photos, so here are two.  I even tried to put them together, but it needs a little more work.  LOL!

 

Bald Eagle Pair in January 2022

 I love photographing this bald eagle pair in St. Mary's County, MD.  They are at our nearby osprey nest often in winter to look for meals and eat.  It is such a privilege to be able to see them so close.  This time they were probably warning off other birds that wanted their meal.

Bald Eagles were Visiting

When a pair of bald eagles came to visit, they separated and one sat on the post while the other used the osprey nest.  To try to turn the photo into one subject, I waited till they were looking at each other, or at least showed some animation.
