Teddy, the Westie at the Dog Park
We met Teddy, a West Highland terrier at the Levels Road dog park in Middletown DE last week. The park is a very nice nice grassy park which is part of the Charles Price Memorial Park https://www.bringfido.com/attraction/2851/ . We've stopped there several times when traveling. Teddy was young and full of energy. And his Mom had a Chuckit toy.

Westie Playing Piano Photo for Sale
Here's another favorite in my current Lexington Park Exhibit. I call it Unleashed Melody or Westie Playing Piano, depending on my mood. It took a lot of patience to take the photo. It won a humor contest at the St. Mary's County Camera Club.

Funny Dog Photos: Learning How to take Humorous Pet Photography
The St. Mary’s County Camera Club had a themed competition of humorous photos last week. Humorous photos are challenging. You can either hope to get lucky when something you see strikes you as humorous or you need to create something funny. I decided to get more pet photography practice and learn about photographing humor at the same time. I enjoyed my photo attempts because I am very interested in humorous photos.
Some pictures are funny if something doesn’t quite make sense or fit in with the rest of the photo, there is an unexpected element. Human activities, clothing, silly hats, funny teeth or children’s toys look funny because we don’t normally associate them with pets. I’ve also seen photos that are funny because something unfamiliar happens, like a photo of a dog floating in the air with balloons attached to his body or dogs waterskiing.
I photographed a Westie “playing” the piano, reading a book and driving a car. My first place photo was a Westie at the piano. The original photo was mildly funny, but the addition of the piece of music called “Unleashed Melody” added an extra funny element. The dog reading a book received an honorable mention. The pictures were all challenging, because the dog was in a wiggly mood.
To see some wonderful humorous dog photos visit photos by Eliot Erwitt or William Wegman. I give my thanks to Andrew Darlow for his pet photo advice.

Pet Photography Practice
I try to find time to practice pet photography when I can. I recently read a book I would recommend called "Pet Photography 101: Tips for Taking Better Photos of your Dog or Cat" by Andrew Darlow. The book has 101 tips for taking good pet photos. He also has a companion pet photo tip website and a flickr site.
The first thing I concentrated on was trying to be at the same level as the pet. For some of these photos I put my sister's Westies on a chair. The chair was a fairly nice backdrop and I didn't have to lie on the floor to photograph them. I moved the chair so that there wasn't a lot of extra things in the back and sides of the photos to distract your eye.
I also looked around for helpful props that we could use and found a dog leash, a Fire Chief hat and a silly martian headband. The dog leash looked the best. I am especially interested in humorous pet photography, so I also tried putting a dog in the little bathroom sink.
It was helpful to have my husband there to get the dog's attention. Even with help, it still takes patience to get good photos.
I am gathering ideas for humorous photos. Please send me any inexpensive ideas you have! I plan to visit Target to see if they have any cute costumes. I also got some useful props from the dollar store.
