River Concert Series Royal Treatment June 30, 2023

Friday’s River Concert on June 30th featured an eclectic combination of music by Copland, Duke Ellington, Prince, Queen, Elvis (the King), Michael Jackson and more.  Superman was the Fireworks musical work of the evening.  The concert began at 7 pm on the green at St. Mary’s College of Maryland with a few sprinkles here and there.  The crowd was huge, with the chance to see fireworks and the vendors filled the road nearby.

River Concert Series 2023 had a Great Start June 23, 2023

Despite the threat of rain, the River concert season started with a very talented guest singer, N'Kenge, a solo by Rick Humphries on saxophone and our own beloved Chesapeake Orchestra, led by Music Director Jeffrey Silberschlag.  The concerts are held on the green at St. Mary's College of Maryland for the next 5 Friday nights at 7 PM.  Do get there early, especially for Fireworks next week (weather permitting).  N'Kenge wowed us with her singing and her gorgeous gowns from New York City.  Music included songs from Divas from the sixties and seventies like Tina Turner, Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin, and Stephen Sondheim.  We especially enjoyed N'Kenge's medley version of "Proud Mary" and "Respect".

Juneteenth June 19th

To honor the emancipation of slaves, consider visiting the Commemorative to Enslaved Peoples in Southern Maryland at St. Mary’s College of Maryland.  Slaves were declared free in 1865, but there is still much need for freedom in 2023.  African Americans are still targets for unfair treatment,  and social and health inequalities in the United States.

Chesapeake Bay Critical Area Driving Tour

We went back to the driving tour from Patuxent River Park to Merkle Park to see how different it is in the Spring.  We visited it last year in the Autumn.  I kind of liked the fall season better.  I suspect it might be quite buggy in the Summer on the trails.  This time I saw mountain laurel, osprey, a water skier, turtles and fishermen.

The walk to the top of this observation tower is quite steep.

The bridge wood knot reminded me of a fish.

I waved at the kayakers paddleing under the bridge.

I liked how the leaves created shadows.
