The Osprey are Coming March 13, 2022

Here's an osprey photo from March 2021 that I like to call Push Me Pull You.

Today the local osprey nest had an eagle in the morning with some food.  An osprey didn't like it, probably complained, and the eagle left in a hurry.  The osprey was keeping an eye on the nest for a while, flying around overhead, but not landing on the nest.

I'm never sure if the osprey visitors have picked out their nest, or are just trying out a few nests in the area, before the mate shows up.

The Osprey are Back! June 2020

The osprey have their nest back, after demolishing the nest and removing the geese, but I don't see any signs of juveniles.  I suspect they have another nest in the trees and use this one for fishing.

We Want Your Osprey Nest Continued

In April our osprey nest was hijacked by a pair of geese. For a couple of days the osprey tried hard to reclaim his nest, but the brave geese wouldn't give up, and are now tending eggs or goslings (can't tell from the shore). We had not heard of this happening, but research tells us it does happen occasionally.

Bald Eagle Confrontation Photos from September 8, 2018

Two bald eagles were making a lot of fuss.  While I watched, an osprey swooped down to complain that the eagles were sitting on HIS nest.  It wasn't the best view of the osprey, but at least I got them all in one photo!  The osprey tend to leave for the south in early September, but even though they weren't hanging around the nest, they still objected to visiting eagles.  They are gone now, so the eagles visit without comment.

Yucatan Mexico Rio Lagartos Feb 9, 2018

We drove to Rio Lagartos and went down the river to Las Coloradas.  The small town of Rio Lagartos is known for many varieties of birds.  Pedro drove our boat from town.  We saw an ibis, a black hawk, an osprey, a roseate spoonbill flying, a cigüeña (stork)a frigate bird, cormorants, brown and white pelicans, a blue heron, a great blue heron, a crocodile, flamingos, and the ever present seagulls. Not all of them are pictured here.

At the farthest point, the boat stopped briefly at Las Coloradas, colored lakes made by a salt factory and the reaction of the salt to micro organisms and algae.  There were a few distant flamingos in the peach colored waters, but nothing like the large numbers we saw in Celestun.  (I haven't figured out when there are more flamingos there, but we only expected to see a few in February and went there to see the many other birds that live nearby).
