Jousting at the 2014 St. Mary's County Fair

While enjoying the St.Mary's County Fair, we watched part of the jousting competition and chatted with Mikayla and her horse Tyke.  Jousting is the official state sport in Maryland.  During a competition, the jouster aims a long lance at 3 separate tiny rings spaced along a straight line, while riding a horse at a fairly rapid pace.  The rings have a little powder on them so they don't stick.  The powder makes a visible puff when the jouster is successful in spearing the ring.
The only thing missing were the medieval costumes.
To learn more about our unusual state sport, visit

Here are a few photos of Mikayla and her horse Tyke.  I enlarged one of the photos so you could see Mikayla's expertise.

A competitor owned a blue eyed mare, that I couldn't resist photographing, even though the fence was in the way.

And by the way, Mikayla did very well.  Congratulations Mikayla!

Ridge Carnival

We visited the Ridge Carnival a few times.  I picked out some of my favorite shots, showing a variety of things you would see at a Fair.  I will share why I liked a particular photo beneath it.  Which ones do you like?

I liked the repeating patterns in this one.

A romantic moment while watching the kids on the teacup ride.

Good things come in threes.  The pink monkey breaks the pattern.

A child brings a smile to a game worker.

Interesting textures with the fence.

Lots of emotion here!

I liked the frame in a frame and big smiles.

Her hair shows the movement, even though this is a still image.  Lots of emotion!

Fun colors.  Since the smurf is bigger, it became the subject in an otherwise busy shot.

The St. Mary's County Fair is this week, September 18-21.  Maybe these photos will give you some ideas for photographing it or interest you enough to attend or enter a contest.  One of the photography categories in the photo contest run by the St. Mary's County Camera Club is last years County Fair.

The Ferris Wheel at the St. Mary's County Fair

We went to the St. Mary's County Fair in Leonardtown on three different days, Sep 19-21.  One day we bumped into our friend Beth and had fun taking Ferris wheel photos together.  The larger Ferris wheel was covered in little LED lights that made fascinating patterns as the wheel was stationary or spinning.  Here are just a few of the patterns I photographed using a tripod to steady the camera in the dark at a low speed.  The colors were gorgeous!

St. Mary's County Fair Photography winners 2011

The County Fair highest honor was a photo of a ship at sunset with silhouetted birds flying around it.  Very Nice.  We all agreed on it, which made it very easy.

Life in St. Mary's County was a photo of an old car in Leonardtown Square.

Sorry, I don't know the names of the photographers.

St. Mary's County Fair will be held Sep 22-25, 2011

Visit the St. Mary's County Fair Sep 22-25, 2011, or better yet, enter one of the competitions.  If you have a beautiful flower in your yard, a photograph, art or craft item that you think is exceptional, enter it in the County Fair Wednesday afternoon or evening.

The full program is available at the St. Mary's County Libraries.  There are lots of things to see and do from visiting the animals, watching a competition, sampling the food and riding a Ferris Wheel.  Some of my past favorites included watching the Mitchell Showboat Marionettes (the kids are so cute) and viewing the chain saw wood carver.  There are lots of things to photograph at the fair too.  The official St. Mary's County Fair website is easily found.  And you can't beat the price, $5 for adults!

I am also excited and honored to be one of the photography judges this year, so I won't be posting any winning photos this year, but I plan to take photos of this year's Fair for fun.

St. Mary's County Fair Photo Winnings

We had a lot of fun at the St. Mary’s County Fair this weekend.  Jim and I helped out the camera club by accepting entries and returning entries on 2 different days at the Photography competition.  Jim also helped out during the judging session by putting up photos.  We both won prizes this year.  I got a big purple ribbon for Best Photo in “Life in St. Mary’s County” for my picture of “St. Mary’s College of Maryland Sunset”.  First place for “Mishka”, (a Siberian Husky on my Apr 20th blog), 2nd place for” a Marionette with Balloons” from last year’s Mitchell Marionettes, 2nd prize for an “Osprey Landing”, and honorable mention for a “Great Blue Heron” and a “Waterfall with Ferns”.  Jim’s 3rd prizes were “Two Geese Arguing” and a “Tunnel Abstract” made with a red torchlight.  I was pleased with the prize for Mishka, because I am learning pet photography.  I also had fun telling Nancy Mitchell and her husband, Jack Gebhardt, from Mitchell Marionette Productions that a photo of their mouse marionette won a prize from last year’s fair.  When Nancy saw me in the crowd, she announced that an award winning photographer was in the audience and they might want to go and view the photo.  Other highlights at the fair included trying a fried milky way bar on a stick made with funnel cake dough, the flowers on exhibit, the horse pull, watching horse jumping, the Mitchell Marionettes, watching the Queen of Tolerance win and visiting the goats , sheep and Clydesdale horses.
